The northwest loop is the longest single riding route in northern Vietnam. It covers around 1,100 km from Hanoi through Mai Chau, Moc Chau, Son La, Dien Bien Phu, Lai Chau, Muong Lay, Muong Nhe and Sapa before returning via Lao Cai. Off-road variations that add Pu Luong, Ta Xua, and Mu Cang Chai push the total to around 1,600 km. Hamid has been guiding riders on this loop since 2013 on dirt track variations, customizing the route based on season, skill level, and how much time you have.

Northwest Vietnam loop: route and distances

The loop starts and ends in Hanoi. The main stops in order are Mai Chau at 135 km, Moc Chau at 200 km, Son La at 320 km, Dien Bien Phu at 480 km, Lai Chau at 580 km, Sapa at 750 km, and Lao Cai at 800 km before the return south.

An off-road variation adds Pu Luong, Ta Xua, Nghia Lo, and Mu Cang Chai between Moc Chau and Son La, pushing the total to around 1,600 km and adding two to three days. This version is the one Hamid recommends for riders who want to see the northwest rice terraces up close rather than from the main road.

The average daily distance on the full off-road variation is around 200 km, with shorter days at Dien Bien Phu and Mu Cang Chai where there is enough to see to justify slowing down.

Key stops on the northwest loop

Mai Chau is a White Thai valley 135 km from Hanoi, flat and surrounded by rice fields. It is a practical first-day stop and a good place to settle into riding before the road starts climbing.

Moc Chau sits on a plateau at 1,050 meters. Tea plantations and stone fruit orchards cover the hillsides and the temperature runs 5 to 8 degrees cooler than Hanoi year-round. The climb from Mai Chau through pine forest takes around two hours.

Son La at 320 km has a French colonial prison that held Vietnamese resistance fighters from the 1930s onward. The prison is well preserved and worth a half-day visit before continuing west toward Dien Bien Phu.

Dien Bien Phu at 480 km is the site of the 1954 battle that ended French military presence in Indochina. The battlefield, command bunker, and A1 Hill are intact. Most riders spend a full afternoon here. It is one of the most historically significant stops on any motorbike route in Vietnam.

Mu Cang Chai at around 600 km on the return leg is a Hmong district at 1,000 meters. The three communes of La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, and De Xu Phinh cover 2,200 hectares of terraced rice fields. Late September to mid-October is when the rice turns gold before harvest and the terraces are at their best.

Sapa at 750 km sits at 1,600 meters. The town is busy with tourism but the Muong Hoa valley at 1,200 meters, 12 km from Sapa, is quieter and worth a morning ride before heading south.

Muong Nhe this is the westernmost district of Vietnam, about 170 km northwest of Dien Bien City and 629 km from Hanoi. It borders Laos and China and offers stunning riding tracks.

Muong Lay the Extreme Northwest Loop, best for motorbike rides for longer days, offers an extremely mountains, off-the-beaten-track, and circuitous route between Lao Cai and Dien Bien Phu.

The two passes that define the northwest loop

Pha Din Pass connects Son La to Dien Bien Phu province. It is 32 km long and climbs to 1,648 meters. The road was used as a supply route during the 1954 Dien Bien Phu campaign. Both sides have long switchback sections and the summit has clear views west into the Dien Bien valley on a dry day. Riding time from base to summit is around 45 minutes.

O Quy Ho Pass between Lai Chau and Sapa is 50 km long and the highest paved pass in northern Vietnam at just over 2,000 meters. The Lai Chau side drops 1,000 meters through dense cloud forest. From November to March the summit regularly sits inside cloud cover, which limits visibility but makes for the most atmospheric riding on the entire northwest loop.

Both passes are paved throughout. The challenge is not technical difficulty but sustained climbing and cold at elevation, particularly from November to February when temperatures on the O Quy Ho summit drop below 5 degrees Celsius.

Northwest Vietnam motorbike tour itinerary options

    • 7-day loop follows the paved circuit: Hanoi, Mai Chau, Moc Chau, Son La, Dien Bien Phu, Lai Chau, Sapa, return to Hanoi. Around 1,100 km total. Suitable for intermediate riders on any bike. This is the fastest way to complete the northwest and covers all the main cultural and historical stops.
    • 10-day mixed road and off-road loop adds Pu Luong, Ta Xua, Nghia Lo, and Mu Cang Chai. Around 1,600 km total. This is the most popular itinerary because it includes the best rice terrace scenery in Vietnam and breaks the Son La section into more interesting riding. Suitable for intermediate riders on XR150 or CRF250 and above.
    • 12-day extended loop builds on the 10-day route with two extra days around Sapa and an optional detour to Sin Ho in Lai Chau province. Sin Ho is a highland town at 1,500 meters with a Saturday market that almost no tour groups reach. The road in from Muong Te is rough and passable on trail bikes from October to April. Suitable for riders comfortable on remote roads with fuel gaps of up to 100 km.

All three can be customized based on your dates and how much off-road riding you want.

    Northwest Vietnam motorbike tour price

Prices depend on group size, number of days, bike type, and accommodation standard. The figures below are based on guided tours Hamid runs from Hanoi.

A 7-day guided  loop for a group of two to four riders runs from around 190 USD to 350 USD per person per day, including bike, guide, accommodation, and daily breakfast. the price is depending on bike type, bigger bikes cost more.

A 10-day mixed road and off-road loop runs from around 950 USD to 1,350 USD per person for the same group size, covering the full Mu Cang Chai and Pu Luong extension.

Solo and private tours carry a surcharge because guide and support costs are split across fewer riders. A full cost breakdown is included in every itinerary Hamid sends on request.

Prices do not include international flights, travel insurance, lunches, dinners, or personal spending.

Best time for a northwest Vietnam motorbike tour

The northwest loop has specific seasonal windows that differ from the rest of northern Vietnam.

Late September to mid-October is the best window if Mu Cang Chai rice terraces are a priority. The fields turn gold in this period and it is the single most photographed landscape on any motorbike route in Vietnam. Accommodation in La Pan Tan and Che Cu Nha villages books out weeks in advance during this window.

October and November offer the best all-round riding conditions on the northwest loop. The Pha Din Pass is dry, the O Quy Ho is clear on most days, and temperatures in the highlands sit between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius during the day.

December to February brings cold fog to O Quy Ho and temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius at night in Sapa. Riding is possible but warm gear is essential and the summit sections can be difficult to see through on overcast days.

June to September is wet season. The dirt tracks through Pu Luong and Ta Xua become slippery after heavy rain and the Pha Din Pass is prone to landslides following extended rainfall. Hamid adjusts the itinerary during this period, routing around affected sections when conditions require it.

Riding style and bikes for the northwest loop

The northwest loop runs on a mix of mountain roads, quiet countryside tracks, and hard-packed dirt trails through the highlands. On a typical day you start on a valley road, move onto a dirt trail climbing through Hmong villages, and finish on a ridge track with views across the terraced hillsides. When rain hits, rutted trails become loose and technical. Hamid reads the conditions daily and adjusts the route based on what the tracks are doing and how much challenge the group wants.

    • The 7-day ride stays on mountain roads and countryside tracks throughout, no technical terrain required.
    • The 10 and 12-day tours push deeper into the highlands on dirt trails through Pu Luong, Ta Xua, and Mu Cang Chai where the real adventure is. These sections reward riders who are comfortable on unpredictable surfaces and willing to work for the scenery.

Bikes for the northwest tours include the Honda XR150 and XR190 for mountain roads and moderate dirt trails, the CRF250 and CRF300 for the more off-road tracks, the CB500X for road-oriented riders, and the BMW GS for longer road-focused trips. A support mechanic follows the group as sweeper on all off-road trips.

How Hamid guides the northwest loop

Hamid has been riding and guiding the northwest loop since 2013. Route planning accounts for fuel stop spacing on remote sections, with gaps of up to 100 km on the Ta Xua and Sin Ho detours factored into the daily distances. Accommodation is booked in advance, including village home-stays in Pu Luong and Mu Cang Chai, Muong Lay & Ngoc Chien that do not appear on booking platforms.

Groups run with two to five riders. Breakdown contacts are in place at Son La, Dien Bien Phu, and Sapa for anything that needs a workshop.
