  • Distance: ~1,800 km over 10 days, mix of paved mountain roads and dirt tracks
  • Highlights: Two UNESCO sites, hill tribe markets, Nguom Ngao Cave, luxury bay cruise

day 1: 220 km

Hanoi to Nghia Lo

Pick-up from your hotel at 8:00 a.m., followed by a short safety briefing before departure. The day opens with a scenic ride along the Red River, passing fishing villages, ferries, and vast cornfields, before continuing through peaceful countryside to Trung Ha Bridge.

After lunch, the route winds into Xuan Son National Park on quiet backroads and two scenic mountain passes. The day ends in Nghia Lo, a charming highland township known for its cool climate, Muong Lo Market, and the Ho Chi Minh Memorial Area. Overnight in Nghia Lo.

day 2: 230 km

Sapa

After breakfast, the road leads 50 km toward Tu Le through sweeping rice terraces and untouched highland scenery. A coffee stop sets the tone before reaching the Parasailing viewpoint, where Tu Le Valley stretches out below the legendary Khau Pha Pass, at 32 km, one of Route 32’s longest and most dramatic crossings.

The route threads through La Pan Tan, Mu Cang Chai, and Che Cu Nha, with a stop at La Pan Tan peak before lunch in Mu Cang Chai. The afternoon push continues over the iconic O Quy Ho Pass, where a twilight pause rewards the effort before descending into Sapa for the night.

day 3: 170 km

Bac Ha

The day begins with a ride through Sapa’s highlights: Sin Chai Valley, Cat Cat Village, and a short off-road stretch before reaching Khoang Village, Ta Phin Valley, and the stunning Lao Chai, Ta Van Valley. A climb to Sau Chua Peak is followed by a descent to Y Linh Ho Village on a newly paved winding road, with lunch at a local homestay in Ta Van.

The afternoon shifts to a twisting backroad running parallel to Provincial Road 153, offering open views before arriving at the vibrant Bac Ha Market. A kaleidoscope of color, flavor, and hill tribe tradition, the market has long served as both a trading post and a social gathering place for the region’s communities. Check-in at Cung Fu Hotel around 5:30 p.m.

day 4: 180 km

Xin Man - Ha giang

Today’s ride heads deep into Ha Giang, one of Northern Vietnam’s most awe-inspiring provinces. Leaving Bac Ha, the route offers a choice between Provincial Road 153 through Coc Pai town and its high-altitude ethnic market, or 40 km of rugged off-road trails. Either way, the journey continues through Phung Village and Vinh Quang before passing through the breathtaking Hoang Su Phi rice terraces, a nationally recognized landscape of extraordinary scale.

Rather than pushing through on the off-road path, the afternoon follows National Highway 2 into Ha Giang City, keeping the arrival at a comfortable hour. Famous for its buckwheat flower fields, towering peaks like Chieu Lau Thi and Tay Con Linh, and the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, Ha Giang rarely disappoints. The day winds down with dinner and an overnight stay in the peaceful Thon Tha village.

day 5: 170 km

Meo Vac

After breakfast, the day opens with a manageable off-road ride through Ha Giang’s forests, passing a cascading waterfall and the weaving village of Lung Tam. The route then reveals the stunning Quan Ba Valley, a sweeping panorama of forested hills, orchid meadows, plum trees, and hidden grottoes sitting nearly 8,000 meters above sea level.

From Quan Ba, the choice is between the main road through Yen Minh’s tranquil pine forest or a 20 km off-road detour through raw countryside and local villages. After lunch in Yen Minh, the journey continues into the Rock Plateau, with a stop at the historic H’Mong Lord’s House before tackling Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of Vietnam’s legendary Four Great Passes. Winding above the emerald Nho Que River, it is widely considered the most dramatic mountain road in the north. A dusk pause at the summit caps the day before returning to Hoa Cuong Hotel for dinner and overnight rest.

day 6: 210 km

Quang Uyen

Today’s ride heads into Cao Bang Province, a region packed with natural landmarks and deep cultural roots. The day blends smooth tarmac with off-road stretches through some of the north’s most dramatic scenery, with the route adjusted based on conditions and riding experience.

The first stop is Khau Vai Love Market near Meo Vac, a centuries-old gathering where separated lovers traditionally reunite once a year. The road then twists through steep climbs and sharp descents into Bao Lac for lunch, before opening up into one of the tour’s most scenic stretches: limestone peaks, golden cornfields, and quiet border villages lining the Vietnam-China frontier. The day wraps up at a cozy homestay in Quang Uyen, a well-earned rest after a full day on the road.

Day 7: 210 km

Ban Gioc, Bac Son

A 210 km day through Cao Bang and Lang Son, anchored by two of the northeast’s most iconic natural sites. Ban Gioc Waterfall opens the morning with tiered cascades of jade-green water straddling the Vietnam-China border, with the option to take a boat ride or simply cool off by the stream. Nearby Nguom Ngao Cave follows, a 45-minute walk through dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations that rank among the finest in Northern Vietnam.

Lunch in Quang Uyen precedes the afternoon push to Bac Son Valley, a cloud-hunting paradise best experienced from the top of Na Lay Peak, reached via 1,200 steps and sitting 600 m above the valley floor. The evening brings a homestay stay with a front-row seat to Bac Son’s traditional roof-tile craft, a hands-on glimpse into local heritage before a well-deserved rest.

Day 8: 240 km

Halong

Departing Bac Son, the route to Ha Long Bay skips the congested National Highways in favor of a quieter path through Khe Ro’s old-growth forest and the sacred western approach to Yen Tu. The Yen Tu Nature Reserve holds deep significance in Vietnamese Buddhism as the site where King Tran Nhan Tong attained enlightenment and founded a distinctly Vietnamese Buddhist tradition, drawing millions of pilgrims and visitors each year.

After lunch, the road rolls into Quang Ninh Province and Ha Long City by late afternoon. The day closes at a comfortable Hotel with a well-earned dinner of fresh seafood and cold beer, a fitting welcome to one of Vietnam’s most iconic destinations.

Day 9: No Ride

An overnight aboard the cruise

Enjoy a leisure breakfast before boarding a luxury cruise at noon. Lunch is served onboard as the boat glides into the UNESCO-listed bay, framed by towering limestone karsts and emerald water.

The afternoon stops at Titop Island, where 430 steps lead to a sweeping panoramic view of the bay. Back on board, a hands-on spring roll cooking class with the ship’s chefs sets the tone for a relaxed evening dinner at 7:15 p.m. The night ends with cuttlefish fishing off the deck, a quietly memorable way to close a day on Ha Long Bay.

Day 10: 170 km

Hanoi

This 10-day motorbike trip through Northern Vietnam covers the region’s most iconic landscapes back to back, from the rice terraces of Tu Le and Mu Cang Chai to the highland passes of Sapa and Hoang Su Phi, the karst frontier of Dong Van and Meo Vac, and the thundering cascades of Ban Gioc Waterfall.

Drive back to Hanoi and arrive around 5pm.

To be honest, i have ride this tour at any time of the year and i dont see any reason to not to recommend it at any specific season.

Technically, the best time to ride is from late October to early April when the weather is cooler, with little rain. if you ride during the summer time (rainy season), you can expect a few hours of rain everyday. No monsoon, no typhoon and no flash-floods at all.

I recommend bringing your own jacket, gloves, and boots for fit and comfort over 11 days.
