Guided Tour
7 days / 6 nights • Guided • 765 mi / 1230 km
Welcome, i have designed this 7-day motorbike tour covers the northeast of Vietnam, riding from Hanoi through Ba Be Lake, Thac Ba Lake, and Dong Van to Ban Gioc Waterfall. The route crosses mountain passes on backroads suited to intermediate riders. Each night you stay with ethnic minority families in the region, with stops at local markets and historical sites in Dong Van. Ban Gioc is one of the largest waterfalls in Southeast Asia and is a full-day stop before the return to Hanoi. The tour balances riding days of 80 to 150 kilometers with time at each location.
Tour highlights:
day 1: 180 km
Bikes are collected on the western edge of Hanoi after a morning briefing over breakfast. The route follows the Red River on low-traffic roads for around 180 kilometers before reaching Thac Ba Lake, one of Vietnam’s three largest freshwater lakes, formed by a hydroelectric dam built in 1971. A short trail from the lakeshore leads to Vu Linh, a Dzao village where you stay overnight with a local family. Dinner is cooked by the host household and eaten together.
day 2: 170 km
The ride out of Vu Linh heads northeast through Yen Binh and Bac Quang districts, with the road climbing steadily as the flatlands give way to the first ridgelines of Ha Giang province. The route crosses a traditional monkey bridge over a tributary of the Lo River, a style of bamboo footbridge still used daily by villagers in the area. Total riding distance is around 150 kilometers. You arrive in Ha Giang city in the afternoon and stay overnight with an H’mong family in a traditional wooden house.
day 3: 160 km
The route north from Ha Giang follows Quan Ba and Yen Minh before reaching Tham Ma Pass at around 1,500 meters. The pass is a 10-kilometer climb with tight switchbacks above the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark covering 2,356 square kilometers. The road levels out approaching Dong Van town, around 150 kilometers from Ha Giang city. Dong Van’s old quarter dates to the early 20th century, with stone houses built by local Lo Lo and H’mong communities still in use today. You stay in a guesthouse in or near the old quarter.
day 4: 120 km
The day starts with Ma Pi Leng Pass, a 20-kilometer ridge road that drops 1,600 meters into the Nho Que River valley below. The pass is considered the most technically demanding section of the northeast loop, with exposed switchbacks cut directly into the limestone cliff face. Lunch is in Meo Vac town before a bamboo raft ride on the Nho Que River through the canyon at the base of the pass. The contrast between the ridge road above and the river level below is around 1,000 meters of vertical. The ride continues to Bao Lac in the afternoon, around 70 kilometers from Meo Vac.
day 5: 200 km
The ride from Bao Lac heads east through Trung Khanh district on backroads that pass through Tay and Nung villages before reaching Ban Gioc Waterfall, around 130 kilometers from Bao Lac. Ban Gioc sits on the Quay Son River at the Vietnam-China border and spans roughly 300 meters wide during the wet season, making it one of the largest waterfalls in Southeast Asia. A short ride from the falls, Nui Thung Mountain gives an elevated view over the surrounding karst plateau. You stay at Sai Gon Ban Gioc Resort, 2 kilometers from the waterfall.
day 6: 180 km
The morning starts at Nguom Ngao Cave, a limestone cave system 2.5 kilometers long with three mapped chambers, located 3 kilometers from Ban Gioc. The ride to Ba Be Lake covers around 160 kilometers through Bac Kan province on forested backroads. Ba Be is Vietnam’s largest natural freshwater lake at 500 hectares, sitting at 145 meters above sea level inside Ba Be National Park. On arrival, a boat trip crosses the lake past Puong Cave and the Tay fishing villages along the northern shore. In the evening, Tay community members perform traditional then lam music at the homestay. You stay overnight in a Tay stilt house on the lakeshore.
Day 7: 220 km
The return ride from Ba Be to Hanoi covers around 240 kilometers south through Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen provinces, reaching the city by mid to late afternoon. The route re-enters Hanoi from the northern edge, arriving back at the tour start point by around 4 p.m. Bikes are returned and the tour ends there.
I have XR 150 and 190 cc, lightweight options for pretty much any roads and trails. Other bikes including, the CB500x, BMW GS and Triumph tiger GT explorer.
This route rides year round. October to April gives the clearest skies and driest roads, with temperatures in Ha Giang between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. The rainy season from May to September brings afternoon showers that typically last 1 to 2 hours before clearing. Roads drain quickly and riding continues the same day. The upside of the wet season is deeper green valleys, fuller waterfalls at Ban Gioc, and significantly fewer tourists on the road.
The route is graded intermediate. Riders need to handle a manual bike on both single-track and unpaved backroads and mountain switchbacks. Ma Pi Leng Pass on day 4 is the most demanding section. No off-road or racing experience is required, but riders with no prior motorbike experience are not recommended for this specific route.
Most of my tours are private with absolutely no extra charge and or differences with groups rides. However, if i run groups, they run between 4 and 6 riders. Smaller groups move faster and have more flexibility at stops.
